Which document you need to enter Paraguay depends above all on your nationality, and the official answer comes from the Paraguayan migration authority, not from a travel website. What can be explained is how to go about checking: what to ask, whom to ask and how far ahead. Requirements change, so check before every trip, even if you have crossed before.
What the requirements depend on
- Nationality. Each country has different agreements with Paraguay. They decide which document is accepted and whether anything must be arranged in advance.
- Residence. A foreigner living in Argentina does not always travel under the same rules as an Argentine citizen.
- Age. Minors have their own rules on permits and authorisations.
- Purpose and length of stay. Tourism, work and study may carry different conditions.
- Route. If you enter through a third country, that country’s rules apply too.
What applies to everyone
- Each passenger carries their own travel document: original, valid and in good condition. A copy or a photo on a phone does not replace it.
- For a tourist, it should be the same document used to enter Argentina.
- Leaving Argentina and coming back is a new entry. If you entered on a visa or a residence permit, confirm that it allows you to re-enter.
- Make sure the exit from one country and the entry to the other are both recorded.
Where you enter
From Argentina, the most used road crossings are Clorinda – Puerto Falcón, on the way to Asunción, and Posadas – Encarnación. Ciudad del Este is reached from Puerto Iguazú by passing through Brazil, so your document must also be good for entering that country.
Vehicle, pets and shopping
Whoever drives answers for the vehicle papers and insurance. Pets need health paperwork, which the owner arranges. What you buy in Paraguay is subject to limits on the way back. Health requirements for people, if any, are announced by each country’s health authority. None of this is fixed, so check the official source.
Where to check
- The national migration authority of Paraguay and that of Argentina.
- The Paraguayan consulate where you live.
- Your own country’s consulate, if your case is unusual.
What we do
On a private transfer to Paraguay, each passenger is responsible for their own documents. When you book, tell us the passengers’ nationalities and the route. The decision at the border always belongs to the authorities. Whether the route is available is confirmed at booking.
