Football in Buenos Aires: getting to the stadiums

Team at LatamTransfer ·

A football match is high on many visitors’ lists for Buenos Aires, and getting to the ground is the easy half. The harder half is leaving, when the whole stadium empties onto closed streets at once. A little planning before kick-off solves it.

Where the grounds are

  • La Bombonera, home of Boca Juniors, in La Boca in the south of the city. The underground does not reach the neighbourhood.
  • The Monumental, home of River Plate, in the north. The national team plays there too.
  • Avellaneda, just across the city’s southern limit, where the stadiums of Racing and Independiente stand a few blocks apart.
  • Several other clubs with grounds inside the city, among them San Lorenzo, Vélez and Huracán.

What a match day looks like

Police set up security rings around the stadium and close the streets inside them. You show your ticket to pass, and no private vehicle reaches the gate. Checks take time, so arrive early.

The day and kick-off time are confirmed close to the date and can move. Do not plan a flight or a dinner around a provisional time.

Getting there

  • Bus, underground or train. They reach the area of some grounds and cost little. They are packed afterwards.
  • Taxi or app. Fine on the way in. After the match there are few cars nearby and the phone network is overloaded.
  • Agency packages. Some agencies sell a ticket with transport and a guide.
  • Private transfer. The driver drops you at the nearest permitted point and collects you at an agreed place. See transfers to matches and concerts.

Getting back

  1. Before you get out, agree a meeting point outside the ring. Choose a named street corner.
  2. Decide what happens if the match runs long or the stands are held back.
  3. Write the point down. There may be no signal.
  4. Walk there as a group.

Our pages on La Bombonera and the Monumental cover what is particular to each area.

Groups and tickets

A minivan takes 6–7 passengers and a van 8. Larger parties travel in two vehicles. The match ticket is not part of the transfer. At the big clubs most seats go to members, so ask through the club’s official channels.
