Tafí del Valle is a cool mountain valley town in Tucumán province, where people from the city go to get away from the heat. The trip from San Miguel de Tucumán starts on the plain and then climbs the Los Sosa gorge, a narrow paved road with constant bends through subtropical forest. It looks short on a map and takes longer than you expect. We arrange it door to door; availability is confirmed when booking.
The climb through the gorge
Fog and rain are common on this stretch, especially in summer, and the driver takes it slowly. After heavy rain, landslides can close the road for a while; conditions are checked before departure and we tell you if plans need to change. If anyone in your group gets car-sick on bends, say so and stops can be made.
At the top the gorge opens into the valley beside the La Angostura reservoir, and Tafí follows shortly.
Planning
- Time of day. Daylight makes the gorge easier. For a flight landing in the evening, see Tucumán Airport and ask us about going up next morning.
- Clothing. The valley is much cooler than the city. Keep a warm layer within reach.
- Busy dates. January, the July holidays and long weekends.
Going further
The same road continues over a mountain pass to Amaicha del Valle, the Quilmes ruins and Cafayate in Salta province. That is a full-day trip with stops, quoted separately. Groups with luggage can ask for a minivan.
