The Puerto Iguazú Duty Free Shop is a large tax-free store in the border area on the Argentine side of the Tancredo Neves bridge, the one that joins Puerto Iguazú with Foz do Iguaçu in Brazil. It sells perfume, drinks, chocolate, electronics and international clothing brands. It works well as a short stop when you cross. Keep in mind that what you buy still counts towards the customs allowance of the country you enter next.
What it is like
Think of an airport duty-free shop set beside a road border. It is one big store with marked prices and no bargaining. The main sections are:
- perfume and cosmetics;
- wine, sparkling wine and spirits;
- chocolate and sweets;
- electronics and accessories;
- clothing, sunglasses, watches and bags;
- toys.
What to check first
- Opening times. They vary by day and season. Look at the shop’s official channel.
- Who may buy, and how much. Border duty-free shops work under rules set by customs: which document you show, any limit per person, and how residents and people returning to Argentina are treated. Ask the shop or customs which rules apply now.
- Payment. Prices are usually shown in US dollars. Other currencies and cards are taken at the shop’s own rate, so ask at the till.
Carry your travel document. You are asked for it when you pay.
Duty-free does not mean limit-free
Goods leave the shop without local taxes. After that they enter a country, and every country has an allowance for goods in a traveller’s luggage. If you go on to Brazil, the Brazilian rule applies. If you stay in Argentina, the Argentine one does. Your home country has its own rule for the flight back. Keep the receipt with the goods. Our guide to customs allowances explains how these limits work.
Is it good value
It depends on the item. The gap with ordinary shops tends to show more on perfume and imported drinks than on electronics. Compare with prices at home, and with Paraguay if you plan to go there too: see what to buy in Ciudad del Este.
Fitting it into your day
The shop is on the road to the bridge, so most people stop on the way to or from Foz and do not make a separate outing. Late afternoon and evening are busier, because many visitors staying in Foz combine the shop with dinner in Puerto Iguazú.
From the centre of Puerto Iguazú you can get there by taxi or local bus. On a private transfer, ask for the stop when you request the quote. With us, whether the crossing to Brazil is available and on what conditions is confirmed when you book.
