Argentina’s top-level polo is played in spring. From about September to December the three tournaments known as the Triple Corona take place, and the last of them, the Argentine Open, is held in Palermo, inside the city of Buenos Aires. Many visitors also spend a day at a polo estancia outside town, which is a different kind of trip.
The three tournaments
- Tortugas Open, run by Tortugas Country Club.
- Hurlingham Open, run by the Hurlingham Club.
- Argentine Open, which closes the season at the Campo Argentino de Polo in Palermo.
The Asociación Argentina de Polo publishes the fixtures and the ground for each match. Check them for your year, because grounds can change.
Rain decides
Matches are postponed when it rains, to protect the fields, and spring rain is common. Leave some room in your schedule and do not keep the final for your last day. If you have a transfer booked for a match, tell us when the new date is announced and we move it.
Watching in Palermo
The Campo Argentino de Polo is on Avenida del Libertador, beside the racecourse. It is a short ride from the hotels in the north of the city. On finals days the exit is slow, since the whole crowd leaves together and the avenue backs up. Agree a meeting point with the driver a couple of blocks away.
Clubs and estancias outside the city
Tortugas and Hurlingham are in Greater Buenos Aires. Further out, the area around Pilar has many clubs and estancias that offer polo days with a lesson and lunch. Public transport is impractical there, and a taxi back is not always to be found.
- The estancia’s own transfer. Some include it. Ask.
- Hire car. Workable if you are comfortable with the motorway exits and country lanes.
- Private transfer or a driver by the hour. The vehicle takes you, waits and brings you back when you choose.

Groups and companies
Corporate outings are frequent in season. A sedan takes up to 3 passengers, a minivan 6–7 and a van 8. Larger parties travel in several vehicles together. Invoices are issued for companies.
