The overland trip from Buenos Aires to Asunción runs up half the length of Argentina, through Santa Fe, Chaco and Formosa provinces to the border at Clorinda. A flight is far quicker. A private transfer is for the cases a flight does not solve.

When the road makes sense

  • Long stays or small relocations, with more luggage than an airline accepts.
  • Pets that cannot fly, or that you would rather not put on a plane (tell us in advance).
  • Families or groups who want to travel together, door to door.
  • Passengers who have been advised not to fly.

If you travel light on a fixed date, compare first. Our guide to Buenos Aires – Asunción by car, bus or plane sets out all three options.

The road

You leave Buenos Aires on the motorway to Rosario and continue to the city of Santa Fe. From there Ruta Nacional 11, an Argentine national highway, heads north through Reconquista, Resistencia and Formosa. North of Santa Fe it is mostly a two-lane road, with trucks and long stretches without services. In summer the heat in Chaco and Formosa is intense.

One day or two

Driving it in one go means a very long day in the vehicle. The sensible plan is two stages with a night on the way, for example in Resistencia. You choose and book the hotel yourself. Stops for meals and rest are agreed at booking.

Border and conditions

The final stretch is the Clorinda – Asunción crossing, where the wait cannot be predicted. Each passenger carries their own valid travel document. Which document is accepted depends on nationality, so confirm it with the migration authorities of Argentina and Paraguay. If children travel without both parents, check which authorisation applies. Whether the route is available, and on what conditions, is confirmed at booking. We do not promise a crossing time.

Frequently asked questions

How long does the trip take?

It depends on the stops, on whether you break the journey overnight and on the border. With the quote we send a plan with approximate times.

Can I bring my dog?

Yes, with advance notice. Health requirements for crossing with animals are set by each country, so check them before you travel.

Which vehicle should we choose for so many hours?

Choose one with room to spare: a sedan for up to 3 passengers, a minivan for 6–7 or a van for 8.
