Ciudad del Este sits at the eastern edge of Paraguay, facing Foz do Iguaçu in Brazil, and it is a very long way from Buenos Aires by road. Two decisions come before booking: whether driving the whole way is worth it, and which of two ways into Paraguay to use.

First, the flight option

There are flights from Buenos Aires to Puerto Iguazú. From there Ciudad del Este is a short transfer, although it involves two borders. With little luggage that is normally the quickest plan. Driving the full distance makes sense with a lot of luggage, pets, a group that fills the vehicle or passengers who do not fly.

Two possible ways in

  1. Through Posadas and Encarnación. North on national highways 12 and 14 to Posadas, over the bridge to Encarnación and then along Paraguay’s Ruta PY06. There is one border control. That last leg is described on the Posadas – Ciudad del Este page.
  2. Through Puerto Iguazú and Brazil. On through Misiones to Puerto Iguazú, into Foz do Iguaçu and across the Friendship Bridge. That is two borders and three countries, and the bridge is heavily congested on shopping days.

Which one is used depends on the passengers’ documents and the exact destination. We settle it at booking.

Splitting the journey

This is not a one-day drive. The usual plan is a night in Posadas, with the border left for the next morning, when the queue tends to be shorter. You book the hotel; intermediate stops are agreed beforehand. In Misiones the road has hills, bends and trucks, and average speed drops.

Documents

Each passenger needs a valid travel document for every country entered, including Brazil if the route goes through Foz. Requirements depend on nationality, so check with each country’s migration authority. Whether the route is available, and on what conditions, is confirmed at booking. We do not promise crossing times.

Frequently asked questions

Can I come back with shopping?

Yes, within what fits in the boot. What you bring back falls under the customs rules of the country you return to, so check the current allowance yourself.

Do we have to go through Brazil?

No. Via Encarnación you enter Paraguay without touching Brazilian territory.

Do you do the return trip?

Yes. A return can be quoted, with the date agreed at booking.
