There are two ways to drive from Posadas to Ciudad del Este, and what separates them is the number of borders. This page describes the way through Paraguay: one crossing, on the bridge to Encarnación, and the rest of the trip on Ruta PY06 heading north-east.
One border or two
- Via Encarnación. One control at the start, then Paraguayan road all the way. You do not pass through Brazil.
- Via Puerto Iguazú. You drive up Ruta Nacional 12 inside Misiones and enter Ciudad del Este through Foz do Iguaçu: two crossings, each with its own queue. That last leg is covered on the Puerto Iguazú – Ciudad del Este page.
Which one fits depends on the day, on each passenger’s documents and on the stops you want. We settle it with you at booking, together with the availability of the route and the conditions.
What Ruta PY06 is like
It runs through farmland in the departments of Itapúa and Alto Paraná. Much of it has one lane each way and carries grain trucks, more of them at harvest time. Soon after Encarnación the Jesuit ruins of Trinidad stand close to the road; if you would like a short stop there, ask in advance.
Arriving
On busy shopping days the centre of Ciudad del Este, next to the Friendship Bridge, becomes very congested. Give us the exact address: a hotel, the shopping area or Guaraní airport, which lies west of the city and does not require driving into the centre.
Documents
Each passenger carries their own valid document. Which one is accepted depends on nationality, so check with the migration authorities of Argentina and Paraguay. With minors, check the authorisation that applies. We do not promise a crossing time.

Frequently asked questions
Can I shop and return to Posadas the same day?
The distance makes that very demanding: many hours on the road there and back, plus the border. Most people spend a night in Ciudad del Este.
Is there a limit on what I bring back?
Purchases fall under the customs rules of the country you return to. Check the current allowance yourself before travelling.
Which vehicle do you suggest if I come back with boxes?
Tell us the rough volume. A minivan or a van has more cargo space than a sedan.
