Almost all of the drive from Posadas to Asunción takes place inside Paraguay. The border comes right at the start, on the bridge to Encarnación, and is followed by several hours on the road heading north-west. The trip takes up most of a day and is better planned with at least one stop.

The route in order

  1. Pick-up at your address in Posadas, at the airport or at the bus terminal.
  2. The San Roque González de Santa Cruz bridge, with the Argentine exit control and the Paraguayan entry control.
  3. Ruta PY01 from Encarnación across southern Paraguay. It is a single-carriageway road for nearly the whole way and runs through small towns.
  4. Greater Asunción, where traffic slows down.

About halfway lies San Ignacio Guazú, a former Jesuit mission town, which works well as a lunch stop. Stops are requested at booking.

Why an early start helps

The only part you cannot control is the queue at the bridge, and it comes first. With an early departure, a delay at the crossing still lets you reach Asunción in daylight. If the trip ends with a flight from Asunción airport, the cautious choice is to travel the day before.

Other options

Long-distance buses run from Encarnación to Asunción, and they are the low-cost choice if you travel light. A private transfer suits families, work groups, passengers with a lot of luggage or with pets, and anyone who wants to go door to door without passing through bus terminals.

Documents and conditions

Every passenger needs their own valid document; which one is accepted depends on nationality and should be confirmed with each country’s migration authority. With minors, check the authorisation that applies. Whether the route is available, and on what conditions, is confirmed at booking, and we do not promise a crossing time. The bridge procedure is explained on the Posadas – Encarnación page.
