El Chaltén is a small village at the foot of Mount Fitz Roy and the base for the trails in the northern part of Los Glaciares National Park. It has no airport, so nearly everyone arrives by road from El Calafate, along Ruta 40 and then beside Lago Viedma. We arrange the trip door to door; availability is confirmed when booking.
The road
It is paved all the way and crosses open steppe with almost nothing in between. Three things shape the drive:
- Wind. Strong crosswinds are common, and the driver keeps a steady pace.
- Wildlife. Guanacos wander onto the road, mostly early and late in the day.
- One usual stop. Parador La Leona, a roadside inn by the river of the same name. Tell us when booking if you want to stop there or for photographs.
On a clear day you see Fitz Roy long before you reach the village.
Timing your trip
Leave early if you plan to walk the same day. From El Calafate Airport the car can go north directly, without entering the town. For a flight home, we suggest a departure time with a margin, as there is no alternative road.
Season and practical points
The trekking season runs roughly from October to April. In winter many places in El Chaltén close, daylight is short and there may be ice; conditions are checked before the trip. Any national park fees are arranged and paid by the visitor. Groups with large backpacks travel more easily in a minivan.
