The Saltos del Moconá are an oddity among waterfalls: the water drops sideways, along the length of the Uruguay river channel, on the border between Misiones and Brazil. They lie inside Moconá Provincial Park, near the small town of El Soberbio, on the far side of the province from Puerto Iguazú. The drive is long, and there is one condition to understand before you book.

First, the river level

The falls can be seen only when the river is low. When it rises, the water covers them and the boat outings stop. The level depends on rain and on dams upstream, and it can change from one day to the next. The park publishes the current state: follow it in the days before and check again before leaving. Nobody can guarantee that the falls will be visible.

Planning the trip

The road crosses Misiones from the Paraná side to the Uruguay side through hilly, winding country. It is too far for a comfortable return on the same day. Most visitors sleep in El Soberbio or at a forest lodge and go to the park the next morning.

  • Transfer only: the driver takes you to your accommodation and comes back for you on the agreed day.
  • Driver at your disposal: the driver stays in the area and takes you between the lodge and the park. The terms are confirmed when booking.

Park entry and the boat outing are arranged and paid for by each visitor on site.

What to bring and which vehicle

Light clothes, insect repellent, shoes that can get wet and a warm layer for the boat in winter. On a drive this long, room matters: ask for a minivan if there are more than three of you or a lot of luggage. Service in this area is confirmed when booking. For shorter outings from Iguazú, see the driver for a day page.

Frequently asked questions

What if we arrive and the river is high?

The falls are under water and no boats go out. That is why flexible dates help, along with a check before you leave.

Can we go and return to Puerto Iguazú the same day?

We do not recommend it. It means many hours on the road for a short time in the park.

When is the chance of seeing them highest?

It depends on the river, not on a fixed date. Look at the park's report in the days before.
