Resistencia, the capital of Chaco province, is roughly half a day’s drive and one border away from Asunción. The trip heads north on Ruta Nacional 11, runs the whole length of Formosa province and enters Paraguay at Clorinda. Most passengers have an international flight, an appointment or family in the Paraguayan capital.

What the road is like

Ruta Nacional 11 is an Argentine national highway. On this stretch it is flat and straight, mostly one lane each way, with long gaps between fuel stations and places to eat. The city of Formosa lies about halfway and is the natural stop to refuel, have a meal and stretch your legs. Summers here are very hot, so carry water, especially with children or older passengers.

Planning the timing

On this route the border comes at the end. You reach Clorinda after several hours on the road, and nobody can tell in advance how long the queue will be. If there is a fixed time on the other side, the sensible plan is an early start and a wide margin. For a flight from Asunción airport, add city traffic as well: the terminal is in Luque, on the far side of the city from the border.

Border and documents

Each passenger shows their own valid document when leaving Argentina and when entering Paraguay. Which document is accepted depends on nationality, so confirm it with each country’s migration authority. If minors travel without both parents, check which authorisation applies. Whether the route is available, and on what conditions, is confirmed at booking, and we do not promise a crossing time. The crossing itself is described in our guide to Clorinda – Puerto Falcón.

Vehicle

A sedan takes up to 3 passengers, a minivan 6–7 and a van 8. On a drive of several hours it pays to have room to spare, so tell us how many suitcases you are bringing.

Frequently asked questions

Can we go and come back on the same day?

It makes a very long day with two border crossings. You can ask for it, but most passengers stay at least one night in Asunción and book the return for another day.

Can you collect me at Resistencia airport?

Yes. Give us the flight number and the driver waits in arrivals with a sign showing your name.

Is it better to drive or to fly?

That depends on the date and on the air connections available, which change. The car covers the trip door to door and helps when you travel with luggage, children or pets.
