Río Gallegos is the capital of Santa Cruz province and the last large city on the Argentine mainland before the Strait of Magellan. Its airport is on the edge of town, a short ride from the centre, and is used both by people visiting the city and by those continuing across the steppe. We arrange the private transfer from arrivals; availability in the region is confirmed when booking.
Trips within the city
Short runs to the centre, hotels and provincial offices; many passengers come for work or official business. Book with your flight number. The flight is followed by that number, your driver waits in arrivals with a sign showing your name, and driver and vehicle details are sent before the trip.
Long drives across the steppe
- El Calafate. It has its own airport, but when those flights are full some travellers land in Río Gallegos and go on by road. That is a drive of several hours.
- Río Turbio. A mining town to the west, near the Chilean border.
These roads have long stretches without services, strong wind for most of the year and, in winter, ice. Conditions are checked before departure, and daylight travel is preferred.
Towards Chile and Tierra del Fuego
The overland routes to Punta Arenas and to Tierra del Fuego cross the Chilean border south of the city, and the second also involves a ferry across the strait. Availability of these routes and the exact conditions are confirmed when booking. Documents depend on each passenger’s nationality and must be checked with the official migration authority of each country before travelling. Time at the border and at the ferry varies and cannot be promised.
Vehicle
A sedan for up to 3 passengers; a minivan or an 8-seat van for groups or heavy luggage, and for extra room on the El Calafate drive. See the fleet page.

Frequently asked questions
Do you run transfers from Río Gallegos to El Calafate?
Yes, subject to availability. Give us the flight time, as we prefer to drive that stretch in daylight.
Can we travel overland to Ushuaia from here?
The road crosses the Chilean border twice and the strait by ferry. Ask us: availability is confirmed when booking.
What if wind delays my flight?
The flight is followed by its number and the meeting follows the actual arrival.
