Bariloche and San Martín de los Andes are the two main bases of the Lake District, and many travellers split their stay between them. Two ways to go

• The Seven Lakes road: through Villa La Angostura and on between forests and lakes. This is the route most people ask for: paved throughout, winding, with many viewpoints. If you want it as a sightseeing day, see the Seven Lakes Route page.
• The steppe road: along the Limay valley, arriving through Junín de los Andes. Longer, but lower and more open.

Which one suits you depends on the season, the weather and whether you want stops. We settle it with you before the trip.

What to consider

In winter there can be snow and ice on the lakes road. Conditions are checked before departure, and if that section is not advisable the transfer goes by the steppe. On a drive this long, stops are part of the plan: tell us how many you want and where.

Vehicle

On a drive of several hours, space matters. Up to 3 passengers travel in a sedan; with children, ski gear or a lot of luggage, a minivan is more comfortable.
