The Seven Lakes Route is the stretch of Ruta 40 between Villa La Angostura and San Martín de los Andes, running through two national parks past one lake after another. From Bariloche it is a full-day outing. We arrange it in a private vehicle that stays with you, with the stops you choose; availability in the region is confirmed when booking.
The day on the road
You leave Bariloche round Lake Nahuel Huapi to Villa La Angostura, where the route proper begins. It is paved throughout and passes lakes Correntoso, Espejo, Escondido, Villarino, Falkner and Machónico before ending at San Martín de los Andes on Lake Lácar. There are signed viewpoints and small beaches where you can get out.
Three ways to do it
- There and back in a day. Possible, but it means many hours in the vehicle. Start early and keep the stops few.
- One-way, staying in San Martín de los Andes. The outing doubles as your Bariloche – San Martín de los Andes transfer, with the luggage on board.
- Out by the lakes, back by the steppe. Returning through Junín de los Andes and the Limay valley gives different scenery and fewer bends.
Season and side roads
In winter there can be snow and ice, and conditions are checked before departure. Autumn, in April and May, brings colour to the forest. January and February are the busiest months at the viewpoints. The side roads to Villa Traful and Lago Hermoso are gravel; tell us beforehand if you want one of them.
What is included
The vehicle and a driver who drives and waits at each stop. The driver is not a tour guide, and meals are at your own cost. For a whole day on the road, a minivan is more comfortable even for a small party.
