On the map this is a short hop; in practice it is two border controls with a bridge between them. Paso de los Libres, in Argentina’s Corrientes province, and Uruguaiana, in the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul, are joined by the Agustín P. Justo – Getúlio Vargas international bridge over the Uruguay river. Whether this crossing is available, and on what conditions, is confirmed at booking.

Who asks for it

  • Travellers who reach one town’s bus terminal and continue from the other: on the Brazilian side towards Porto Alegre, on the Argentine side towards Buenos Aires.
  • People working in foreign trade and freight, a large part of life in both towns.
  • Families with relatives across the river, or with suitcases, children or a pet, for whom the local cross-border bus is awkward.

How it is arranged

  1. You send the pick-up address, the drop-off address, the number of passengers and the luggage.
  2. We confirm whether the crossing is available on that date and agree the price per vehicle.
  3. Your driver collects you at the door. At the border each passenger completes the exit from one country and the entry to the other.
  4. The trip ends at the address you gave on the far side.

What nobody controls

Cars and trucks share the bridge, and a great deal of freight passes here. The wait changes with the day, the hour and the season; in summer Argentine families driving to Brazilian beaches join the queue. We do not promise a crossing time. If you are connecting with a bus or a flight, leave a wide margin. Our guide to this crossing gives the general picture.

Documents

Each passenger carries their own valid travel document. Which document is accepted depends on nationality, so check with the migration authority of Argentina and of Brazil before travelling. Minors not travelling with both parents usually need an authorisation.

Frequently asked questions

Can I stay in the same vehicle as far as Porto Alegre?

That is a separate and much longer trip. See Uruguaiana – Porto Alegre and ask us about availability.

How long does the crossing take?

There is no fixed time. It depends on the queue at the controls, which varies by day and season.

Which vehicle suits such a short run?

A sedan is enough for up to 3 passengers with ordinary luggage. With more people or many suitcases, ask for a minivan or a van.
