Cafayate is Salta’s wine town, set among high-altitude vineyards in the southern Calchaquí Valleys and known for torrontés, the aromatic local white. The drive from Salta follows Ruta Nacional 68, paved throughout, and its last part runs through the Quebrada de las Conchas, a gorge of red rock that many travellers remember as much as the town.

A road worth stopping on

Inside the gorge the rock formations have names and stand right by the roadside. The Garganta del Diablo and the Anfiteatro are the two most visited, each a short walk from the vehicle.
