Humahuaca is the northern end of the classic Quebrada route: a town of cobbled streets and adobe houses at close to 3,000 metres. From it a gravel road climbs to the Hornocal viewpoint, facing the range known as the hill of fourteen colours, at more than 4,000 metres. The two parts of this trip are very different and should be planned separately.
Part one: Salta to Humahuaca
Paved all the way. The road passes San Salvador de Jujuy and then follows Ruta Nacional 9 up the valley, past Purmamarca and Tilcara. Short stops can be requested, for instance at the Tropic of Capricorn marker in Huacalera or at the church in Uquía.
Part two: up to Hornocal
This is a mountain road on gravel, with bends and a steady climb. Whether the transfer vehicle drives it, or whether it is wiser to change in Humahuaca to a local pick-up truck, depends on the state of the road and the type of vehicle. We confirm that when you book. Local transport, when used, is paid by you on the spot, as is the entry fee charged at the viewpoint.
Good to know before going up:
- The colours are usually better lit in the afternoon.
- A path leads down from the viewpoint. The way back is uphill and, at that height, far harder than it looks.
- After rain, mostly in summer, the road may be impassable.
Altitude
The viewpoint is the highest spot in the whole Quebrada. Move slowly and, if you can, spend a night or two in Tilcara or Purmamarca first. Anyone with a health condition should consult their doctor before going.
As a day trip from Salta
Possible, but it makes for a very long day. Sleeping in the Quebrada and going up rested is the more sensible plan. See the transfer to Purmamarca and Tilcara or a multi-day driver.

Frequently asked questions
Does the transfer include the drive up to Hornocal?
That is settled at booking, according to the vehicle and the road. If it is not possible, we leave you in Humahuaca to go up with local transport.
What if it rains on the day?
The driver assesses the situation in Humahuaca. If the road is not in condition, the ascent is not made.
Is it suitable for children and older travellers?
Yes, but because of the altitude each family should check with their doctor first, and nobody should push themselves at the viewpoint.
