San Antonio de Areco is a small town in the north of Buenos Aires province, known as the home of gaucho tradition. It is a classic day out from Buenos Aires for anyone who wants to see the pampas: an old centre with silversmiths and leather workshops, old general stores turned into bars, and working estancias (ranches) in the surrounding countryside.
Town or estancia
The two trips are organised differently.
- The town: your driver drops you in the centre and you explore on foot: the square, the craft workshops, the old bridge over the Areco river and the gaucho museum.
- An estancia day: many estancias receive guests for a “día de campo” with lunch, horses and riding displays. You book that directly with the estancia. We need its name and the time you are expected, because each has its own entrance and reception time.
Some estancia entrances are unpaved. After heavy rain, ask the estancia about the state of the access road.
A day trip with the driver waiting
Most visitors book a return with waiting: leave in the morning, have lunch there and come back in the afternoon with the same driver. To combine the town and an estancia, or add a stop on the way, look at the car with driver by the hour. If you stay overnight, book the two legs as separate transfers.
When to go
Weekends and public holidays are livelier and more places are open. In November the town holds the Fiesta de la Tradición: it fills up, some streets close, and transport should be booked well ahead. Weekdays are quiet, but check first which workshops and museums open.
Vehicle
A sedan takes up to 3 passengers, a minivan 6 or 7, and a van 8. Larger groups travel in two or more vehicles together.
