Asunción Airport (ASU) is not in the Paraguayan capital itself but in the neighbouring city of Luque, part of Greater Asunción, north-east of the historic centre. Before choosing how to get into town, settle one question: which “centre” you mean. The city has two, and they are some way apart.
The old centre and the new one
- Historic centre. The microcentro near the Paraguay river: government buildings, older hotels and offices. It is the furthest destination from the airport.
- Villa Morra and Avenida Aviadores del Chaco. The newer district of offices, hotels and shopping centres. It lies on the airport’s side of the city, so the ride is shorter.
Luque is also home to the headquarters of CONMEBOL, the South American football confederation, close to the airport and a common destination on football trips.
Getting out of the airport
- Taxi. There is a rank at the terminal. Ask how the fare is worked out and how you can pay: the local currency is the guaraní, and not every car takes cards or foreign cash.
- Ride-hailing apps. They operate in Asunción. Check on arrival where the pick-up point is and whether your phone has data in Paraguay.
- City bus. Ask on the spot whether a line passes the airport access. With luggage and no knowledge of the city it is not practical.
- Hire car. Rental companies have desks in the terminal.
- Private transfer. One vehicle for your group, met in arrivals, at a price agreed beforehand.
Heat, rain and rush hour
The Paraguayan summer is very hot. Heavy storms flood streets within minutes and traffic stops until the water drains. At peak hours the avenues towards the centre are congested. If you have a meeting or a match to reach, leave a margin.
Documents and onward travel
The documents needed to enter Paraguay depend on each passenger’s nationality; check with the official migration authority before you travel. The same applies if you later cross by land into Argentina at Puerto Falcón and Clorinda, a border close to Asunción. Every person shows their own valid document, minors travelling without both parents usually need authorisation, and queues vary from day to day. Encarnación and Ciudad del Este are long road trips.
Where we come in
LatamTransfer is based in Buenos Aires. Availability of a transfer in Asunción, and the exact conditions of any border crossing, are confirmed when you book. We do not promise a crossing time. See also the page on Asunción Airport and the Paraguay section.
