Posadas Airport (PSS) lies south-west of Posadas, the capital of Misiones province, outside the centre and close to Ruta 12. The ride into town is short. Few visitors stop there, though: the Paraguayan city of Encarnación is just across the Paraná, and Posadas is the starting point for the Jesuit ruins, the Iberá wetlands and the long road to Iguazú.
Getting into town
The centre is laid out around Plaza 9 de Julio, and the riverfront promenade, the costanera, has hotels, bars and space to walk. From the terminal you can choose between:
- Taxi and remis. Both work from the terminal. A remis is a car with a driver booked at a desk for an agreed fare.
- City bus. Ask on arrival whether a line passes the airport and which card is used to pay.
- Apps and car hire. Check on the spot whether there is service and availability.
- Private transfer. One vehicle for your group, with the driver waiting in arrivals.
Crossing to Encarnación
The international bridge starts inside the city and leads to Encarnación in Paraguay. It is a border crossing: Argentine exit control, the bridge, then Paraguayan entry control. Each passenger shows their own valid document. Which document is accepted depends on nationality and must be checked with the official migration authority of each country. Minors travelling without both parents usually need authorisation. Queues vary, and they are longer in summer, at weekends and on shopping days. Not every taxi or remis will cross, so ask first. See the guide to the Posadas – Encarnación crossing.
Roads out of Posadas
- San Ignacio Miní. The Jesuit ruins are to the north-east along Ruta 12 and fit into a half-day outing.
- Iberá wetlands. In Corrientes province. Some access roads are earth or gravel and get difficult after rain; conditions are confirmed before the trip. See the route Posadas – Esteros del Iberá.
- Puerto Iguazú. North along Ruta 12, a long drive of several hours.
Weather
Summer heat is intense and storms drop a lot of water in a short time. If your plans include the red-earth back roads, bring shoes that can get muddy.
Where a private transfer fits
For reaching the hotel with luggage, for an outing to San Ignacio with waiting and return, or for continuing by road towards Iguazú with stops. The price is per vehicle and agreed beforehand. Availability in Posadas, and the conditions of any crossing into Paraguay, are confirmed when you book. See also the page on Posadas Airport.
