Getting from El Calafate Airport (FTE) to town

Team at LatamTransfer ·

El Calafate Airport (FTE) stands alone on the Patagonian steppe, east of the town, in Santa Cruz province. Nothing is within walking distance, so every arrival continues by road. Not everyone is heading for El Calafate either: a good number of passengers go straight on to El Chaltén.

Three directions from the terminal

  • El Calafate town. The centre follows Avenida del Libertador. Some hotels sit on the slopes above it, and lodges and estancias lie outside the town on their own access roads.
  • El Chaltén. The trekking village is to the north along Ruta 40. From the airport the road joins that route without entering El Calafate, so going into town first is a detour.
  • Perito Moreno glacier. It is west of the town, on the opposite side from the airport. Most people visit it on another day, starting from their hotel and without luggage.

Ways to leave the airport

  • Taxi and remis. A remis is a car with a driver booked at a desk for an agreed fare. Both work from the terminal. Expect a wait when several flights land together.
  • Shared shuttle. Check on arrival whether a shuttle van runs to the hotels. It leaves when full and drops passengers at several addresses.
  • Bus to El Chaltén. Ask whether any bus company picks up at the airport and whether the departure fits your flight. Otherwise you go to the bus terminal in town first.
  • Hire car. There are rental desks. Allow for strong wind, long stretches with no services and gravel on some access roads.
  • Private transfer. One vehicle for your group, with the driver in arrivals holding a sign with your name.

Do not assume there is a public bus or a ride-hailing app. Check on the spot.

Wind, season and trekking gear

Patagonian wind is strong, above all in spring and summer, and it sometimes delays flights. The busy season runs from spring to autumn and peaks in January and February, when booking ahead matters. Winter is quiet, with short days and possible ice on the road; conditions are checked before the trip. If you are going to hike in El Chaltén, count large rucksacks and poles as pieces of luggage when you choose the vehicle.

Where a private transfer fits

It suits a direct run to El Chaltén without waiting for a timetable, a stay outside the town, or a group with a lot of luggage. We follow the flight by its number, and the price is per vehicle and agreed before the trip. Availability in El Calafate is confirmed when you book. Frequently asked questions

Can I go straight from the airport to El Chaltén?

Yes. The road north starts without entering El Calafate. It is a long drive across the steppe with few services on the way.

Is the Perito Moreno glacier on the way into town?

No. The glacier is west of the town and the airport is east of it. Going there straight from the flight with luggage is possible but impractical.

Is there a shared shuttle to the hotels?

Ask in the terminal when you land. If one is running, remember that it waits to fill up and makes several stops.

Which vehicle should we ask for with trekking rucksacks?

It depends on the number of people and bags. Four or more travellers with large rucksacks usually need a minivan.
