To reach Mina Clavero from Córdoba city you have to cross the Sierras Grandes on the Camino de las Altas Cumbres, the “high peaks road”. On the far side lies the Traslasierra valley, with a different climate and a slower pace. The crossing is the most beautiful part of the trip and the part that needs most care.

The Camino de las Altas Cumbres

This is a paved high mountain road across the Pampa de Achala plateau. It has bends and gradients, and almost no services on the high section. What to know:

  • Fog is frequent and forces everyone to slow down.
  • In winter there can be ice or snow and temporary closures. Road conditions are checked before departure.
  • Condors are often seen. If you would like to stop at a viewpoint, tell the driver.
  • The access to Quebrada del Condorito National Park is on this road.

What is on the other side

Mina Clavero is a summer resort known for its river beaches, with natural pools among the rocks. Villa Cura Brochero, a place of pilgrimage, adjoins it, and Nono is a short drive further. In January and February the town is full and the centre moves slowly.

After summer storms the mountain rivers can rise suddenly. Pay attention to local warnings at the river beaches.

How to book

  1. Give us the town and the address: many cabins are outside the centre, on unpaved streets.
  2. Tell us if anyone in the group gets carsick, so we plan a break on the climb.
  3. Book the return in the same request. In season there is less availability.

We can collect you at Córdoba airport. For families with holiday luggage a minivan is the sensible choice.

Frequently asked questions

What if the Altas Cumbres road is closed?

We tell you before departure. Depending on the case, we wait, change the time or take a longer alternative road, with the quote adjusted.

Can we stop to look for condors?

Yes, at the viewpoints along the road. Seeing them depends on the day and on luck.

Is a same-day round trip a good idea?

It is a lot of mountain road for one day. Most people stay at least a night.
