Colonia Carlos Pellegrini is a small village on the shore of the Iberá lagoon, in the heart of the wetlands, and the place where the boats leave to see capybaras, caimans and marsh deer. From the city of Corrientes it is a drive that takes up much of the day: first on asphalt to Mercedes, then along Provincial Route 40, which runs into the marshland.
The route, in two parts
-
Corrientes to Mercedes. South on Ruta Nacional 12, then on Route 123. A paved road with no complications. Shortly before Mercedes stands the roadside shrine of Gauchito Gil, a popular folk saint, where many travellers ask to stop. Mercedes is the last town with full services: fuel, cash machines and shops.
-
Mercedes to Pellegrini. Route 40 has unpaved stretches and its condition changes with the rain. Speed drops here and the travel time becomes hard to predict. You enter the village over an embankment and a bridge across the lagoon.
Before you set off
- Bring cash: services in the village are limited.
- Have your accommodation booked and tell us the name of the lodge.
- Leave early, so that the unpaved part is driven in daylight.
- Summer is very hot: water, insect repellent and sunscreen.
If you are short of time
Iberá has other gateways closer to the provincial capital, such as Concepción del Yaguareté Corá or San Miguel. If you cannot give Pellegrini two nights, ask us about those alternatives.
Vehicle and return
On a long drive, space matters: a sedan for up to 3 passengers, a minivan or van for larger groups or a lot of luggage. Book the return together with the outward trip. Service in the area and the state of the road are confirmed when booking; if you arrive by air, see Corrientes Airport.
