Child seats and rules for travelling with children

Team at LatamTransfer ·

In Argentina children have to ride in the back seat, in a restraint that fits their size. In practice almost no taxi or ride-hailing car carries a child seat, so anyone travelling with children needs to sort this out before getting into a car.

What the rules say, in general terms

Traffic rules require minors to sit in the back, secured in a seat or booster suited to their weight and height. Up to what age or height this is compulsory, and how it applies to taxis, remises and app cars, depends on national law and on each jurisdiction. If you need the exact wording, check the text in force with the road safety authority. Rules aside, the reason is simple: a car seat belt is designed for an adult body.

Types of seat

  • Infant carrier. For babies, fitted facing backwards.
  • Harness seat. For small children who can sit up on their own.
  • Booster. For older children, who use the car’s own belt.

Which one applies depends on weight and height more than on age.

Your options

  • Bring your own seat. You know it fits and your child is used to it. Airlines usually carry one as special baggage under their own conditions, which are worth confirming. You fit it yourself, and not every car has ISOFIX points, so it may have to be held by the seat belt.
  • Taxi or app. The car normally arrives without a seat and there is no way to make sure of the opposite. For a motorway ride to Ezeiza we do not recommend it.
  • Private transfer with a seat on request. When you book, ask for the seat and the vehicle arrives with it fitted.

What we need to know to prepare the trip

  1. The approximate age, weight and height of each child.
  2. How many seats are needed and of which type.
  3. Whether you are bringing a seat of your own.
  4. Whether you have a pushchair, and how many suitcases.

Tell us in good time: seats are prepared on request and are not kept in every vehicle.

Choosing the vehicle

Every child takes up a place, whatever their age, and a child seat fills a whole seat. A sedan carries up to 3 passengers: a couple with one child fits well, but with two child seats and a pushchair a minivan is the sensible choice. The capacity of each class is on the vehicles page.

Frequently asked questions

Do Buenos Aires taxis have child seats?

As a rule, no. If you need one, bring your own or book a transfer and request it in advance.

Does a baby on a lap count as a passenger?

Yes. Every child counts as a passenger and should travel in their own restraint, not on a lap.

How far ahead should I ask for the seat?

The sooner the better: ideally together with the booking. If it comes up at the last minute, message us and we will tell you whether it is possible.
