SIM and eSIM on arrival in Argentina

Team at LatamTransfer ·

When you land in Argentina there are three ways to get mobile data: roaming with your home operator, a travel eSIM bought before you leave, or a local prepaid SIM. None suits everyone. The choice depends on how long you stay, on your phone and on how much you need to be online the moment you step off the plane.

Roaming with your home operator

This is the simplest route: switch the phone on and it works with your usual number. The cost depends entirely on your plan. Some operators include South American countries, others charge by the day or by use. Check before you travel and buy a package if you need one, because data without a package can be expensive.

Travel eSIM

You buy it online and install it at home over Wi-Fi. On arrival you switch the line on and have data straight away. Keep in mind:

  • The phone has to support eSIM and be unlocked.
  • Most travel eSIMs are data-only, with no local number for calls.
  • Your messaging apps keep working with your usual number.

For a short stay this is usually the most practical option, because you arrive connected.

Local prepaid SIM

The main operators in the country are Personal, Movistar and Claro. SIM cards are sold in their shops and at kiosks, the small street-corner shops. To activate the line you have to register it with an identity document, so take your passport. It makes sense if you are staying several weeks or need an Argentine number. The drawback is time: you have to find an open shop, go through the registration and top up.

What to expect at the airport

Ezeiza and Aeroparque offer Wi-Fi to passengers, which is enough to send a message. Do not count on buying a SIM on arrival: sales points and their opening times change, and at night they are likely to be closed.

Meeting your driver without data

In Argentina almost everything is arranged over WhatsApp. If you have booked a transfer with us:

  1. Save a screenshot of the message with the driver’s details and the meeting point.
  2. Give us the number you use on WhatsApp or Telegram, with the country code.
  3. After landing, connect to the airport Wi-Fi if you need to write to us.

Even if you are offline, the driver waits in arrivals with a sign bearing your name, and the flight is followed by its number. The booking steps are on the how to book page.

Frequently asked questions

Can I buy a SIM card at Ezeiza airport?

It depends on the moment: sales points and their hours change. The safer plan is to arrive with roaming or with an eSIM already installed.

Does WhatsApp work on a data-only eSIM?

Yes. The app stays tied to your usual number and uses the eSIM's data connection.

What if I land with no connection and have a transfer booked?

The driver waits in the arrivals hall with the sign all the same. If you need to write, use the airport Wi-Fi.
