Gramado and Canela are not beach towns. They are two neighbouring towns in the Serra Gaúcha, the hills north of Porto Alegre, with architecture of German and Italian heritage, chocolate shops and cold winters. From Buenos Aires the road trip is made in stages, with a night on the way in nearly every case. Whether the route is available, and on what conditions, is confirmed at booking.

When they fill up

  • In July, during the winter school holidays.
  • In August, during the Gramado film festival.
  • Towards the end of the year, with Natal Luz, the town’s Christmas festival.

Dates change every year: check them before choosing your travel day and book earlier if they coincide.

How the trip is put together

The way goes north on Ruta Nacional 14, crosses to Uruguaiana at Paso de los Libres and runs across Rio Grande do Sul on the BR-290 highway to the Porto Alegre area. That part is described in Buenos Aires – Porto Alegre. For one or two people it is usually quicker to fly to Porto Alegre and continue by road; the full transfer suits families and groups with luggage, or anyone travelling with a pet.

The last stretch is a hill road

From the plain the road climbs through bends, sometimes in fog. Whenever possible this part is driven in daylight. If someone in your group suffers on winding roads, tell us and we take it into account when planning stops.

Border and documents

Each passenger crosses with a valid travel document. Which one is accepted depends on nationality and must be checked with the migration authority of Argentina and of Brazil. Minors without both parents usually need an authorisation. The wait at the bridge varies, and we do not promise a crossing time.

Frequently asked questions

Can the vehicle stay with us in Gramado?

You can ask. The sights are spread across both towns, so it makes sense; we confirm it with the quote.

Do we need warm clothes?

In winter, yes: these are hills and it gets cold. Keep a coat within reach, not at the bottom of the boot.

Can it be combined with the beach?

Yes. See Torres and Capão da Canoa, on the coast of the same state.
