Porto Alegre, capital of the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul, lies beyond two Argentine provinces and the full width of the state itself. By road it is more than one sensible day of driving, so the transfer is planned with stops and, in nearly every case, a night on the way. Whether the route is available, and on what conditions, is confirmed at booking.

Plane, bus or car with driver

Flying is faster, and for one or two people with light luggage it is usually the sensible choice. Long-distance buses also run. A private transfer suits other situations:

  • a family or group sharing the price of one vehicle;
  • a relocation or long stay, with many suitcases or work equipment;
  • a pet you would rather not send in an aircraft hold;
  • stops of your own choosing along the road.

The road

The usual way is north on Ruta Nacional 14 to Paso de los Libres, over the bridge to Uruguaiana, and then east across Rio Grande do Sul on the BR-290 highway. There is an alternative through Uruguay, with two borders instead of one. Which to take is decided at booking, according to the date and the passengers’ documents.

How the trip is split

An early start from Buenos Aires gets you to the border in daylight. Many passengers prefer to sleep in Paso de los Libres or Uruguaiana and do the Brazilian part the next day. The two halves are described in Buenos Aires – Uruguaiana and Uruguaiana – Porto Alegre.

Border and documents

Each passenger crosses with their own valid travel document. Which one is accepted depends on nationality, so check with the migration authority of Argentina and of Brazil before travelling. Minors not travelling with both parents usually need an authorisation. The wait at the bridge varies by day and season, and we do not promise a crossing time.

Frequently asked questions

Can it be done without an overnight stop?

It is a very long trip for a single day. Splitting it in two is the reasonable plan; the final schedule is confirmed at booking.

Which vehicle should I choose?

A sedan for up to 3 passengers, a minivan for 6 or 7, a van for 8. On a trip like this, spare room for luggage is worth having.

Can you drop me at Porto Alegre airport?

Yes, tell us the terminal or the address. If you have a flight, leave a wide margin because of the border.
