Tandil is a hill town in the middle of Buenos Aires province, little known to foreign visitors and a favourite short break for people from the capital. They go for low rocky hills, cabins, walks and boards of local cheese and cured meat. The drive takes a few hours, and nearly everybody travels on the same days.
When people go
- Long weekends. Demand rises sharply, and the road back to Buenos Aires is heavy on the last day.
- Easter. The busiest time of the year in town.
- Winter school holidays and ordinary weekends, which are much quieter.
- Weekdays, for work or the university.
For the busy dates, book ahead and fix the return time from the start.
The road
You leave Buenos Aires by motorway; most of the rest is two-lane road shared with lorries. Driving time therefore depends a good deal on the day and the hour. An early start on the way out, and a return that avoids the late afternoon of the last day of a holiday, make for an easier trip.
Other ways to get there
Most Argentines drive their own car. The long-distance bus from Retiro is the other option; it arrives at the terminal, some way from many cabins, which tend to be on the outskirts or up in the hills. A private transfer goes to the door of your accommodation, which helps when nobody in the party wants to drive abroad, or when you travel with children or older relatives.
Getting around Tandil and choosing a vehicle
The sights are scattered around the town. If you will not have a car there, you can ask for the driver to stay with you: see driver by the hour or by the day. For a large family or two couples with luggage, a minivan is the comfortable choice.

Frequently asked questions
Can the driver drop us at a cabin outside town?
Yes. Send the exact location or the directions from your host, because some access roads are unpaved.
Can we book both ways for a long weekend?
Yes, and it is wise to book them together, so the return time is settled on a day of high demand.
Can we stop for a meal on the way?
Yes. Stops are requested when booking or agreed with the driver during the trip.
