Bahía Blanca, in the south-west of Buenos Aires province, is a working city: a port, a petrochemical complex, a university and services for the whole region. By road it is a full day’s drive, so it is fair to say at the start that for one person with light luggage, flying is usually faster.

• Plane. There are scheduled flights from Buenos Aires to the city’s airport. This is the obvious choice for a short meeting.
• Coach. Long-distance buses leave from Retiro, often overnight, and arrive at the bus terminal. They suit people travelling light.

When the road makes sense

• You are carrying tools, samples, equipment or more cases than an airline accepts.

How the trip is planned

The usual road is Ruta 3, much of it a two-lane highway with heavy lorry traffic. That is why the start is early and stops for meals and rest are planned in advance. If the timing leaves no margin, the trip can be split into two stages; this is settled when you book. A team that has to move between the port, the plants and the centre for several days can ask for a driver by the day.

Beyond the city
