To choose, start with the distance. Some destinations are a morning’s drive and can be done there and back in a day. Others take a full day, are planned with stops and, where needed, split into two stages, which is confirmed when you book.
On the longest routes it is fair to be frank: for someone travelling alone, a flight or a long-distance bus is usually faster or simpler. Going by road pays off for groups, families with a lot of luggage, pets and trips with several stops. A minivan carries up to seven passengers together.
