Itaipu is a hydroelectric dam on the Paraná river, north of Foz do Iguaçu, owned jointly by Brazil and Paraguay. It is one of the largest hydroelectric plants in the world and is open to visitors on tours run by its own visitor centre. From Puerto Iguazú the transfer crosses into Brazil and drives through the city of Foz; we arrange the trip there and back, with availability and conditions confirmed when you book.

Start with the tour time

Unlike the falls, Itaipu works on set departure times, booked in advance and paid for by each visitor. There is a border on the way whose queue cannot be predicted, so the practical order is:

  1. Choose your tour and time on Itaipu’s official channels.
  2. Send us that time, your hotel and the number of passengers.
  3. We suggest a departure time with a margin for the crossing.

Kinds of visit

There is a panoramic tour on the complex’s own buses and a longer technical visit inside the plant. Some visits have age and clothing requirements. Check them before you buy, especially when travelling with children.

Border and documents

The vehicle passes Argentine exit control and Brazilian entry control at the Tancredo Neves Bridge. Each passenger needs their own valid travel document, minors included. Which document is accepted depends on nationality and must be confirmed with the migration authority of each country. Keep it with you all day.

Adding another stop

Itaipu usually fills half a day. Many travellers add the Brazilian side of the falls or lunch in Foz to the same outing. Tell us when booking so that the quote covers the whole day.

Frequently asked questions

Do you book the dam tour for us?

No. The tour is booked directly with the Itaipu visitor centre. We take care of the transport and the waiting.

What if the border queue makes us late?

We cannot guarantee a crossing time. That is why the departure is planned with a margin, and we suggest checking the change conditions of your ticket.

Can the dam be visited from Paraguay as well?

Yes, there is access on the Paraguayan side, organised separately. This page describes the transfer to the Brazilian visitor centre.
