Which Buenos Aires neighbourhood to stay in

Team at LatamTransfer ·

Buenos Aires is a large city, and where you sleep shapes the trip: a room among the bars of Palermo and a room beside the docks of Puerto Madero give two different stays. Three questions help you choose: what you want on your doorstep, how you plan to get around, and which airport you use.

The neighbourhoods visitors choose

  • Palermo. The largest neighbourhood in the city. Restaurants, bars and small hotels in the areas known as Soho and Hollywood, and wide parks towards the river. Lively at night, above all at weekends.
  • Recoleta. Residential and elegant, with traditional hotels, museums and the historic cemetery. Quiet and pleasant to walk.
  • Retiro and the centre. Offices, pedestrian Calle Florida, the Obelisco and the Teatro Colón. Practical for business trips, and far quieter in the evening and at weekends.
  • Puerto Madero. Converted docks, modern towers and large chain hotels. Orderly and calm, with less neighbourhood life.
  • San Telmo. The old quarter: cobbled streets, antique shops, tango and the Sunday fair. Hostels and small hotels.
  • Belgrano. Residential, with the Barrio Chino and a subte line. It tends to suit families and longer stays.

Caminito in La Boca is a daytime visit. Travellers do not usually stay there.

Getting around

Subte line D links the centre with Palermo and Belgrano. No line runs through Puerto Madero, so from there you rely more on walking or on a car. Taxis and ride-hailing apps work in all these areas. If a group wants to see several neighbourhoods in one day, a car with driver by the hour saves arranging one ride after another.

Thinking about the airports

Aeroparque sits by the river in the north of the city, so Palermo, Recoleta and Belgrano are the nearest areas. Ezeiza is outside the city and reached by motorway. From San Telmo, Puerto Madero and the centre the way onto that motorway is more direct; from Palermo or Belgrano you first cross part of the city. Even so, the time of day counts for more than the neighbourhood, because at peak hours every route slows down.

What matters for a pick-up

  • City centre. Some streets are pedestrian and vehicle access is restricted on weekdays. The meeting may be at the nearest corner the car can reach.
  • San Telmo. Narrow cobbled streets. On Sundays the fair closes Calle Defensa.
  • Palermo. On weekend nights the streets around the bars get congested.
  • Rented flats. Send the exact address, the cross streets, the floor and the buzzer. In Argentina an address is normally given together with the two streets it lies between.

Frequently asked questions

Which neighbourhood is closest to Ezeiza?

None is close, as the airport lies outside the city. The southern areas and the centre have more direct access to the motorway.

Should I stay near Aeroparque for an early domestic flight?

It helps a little, but you need not pick your area for that reason. Palermo, Recoleta and Belgrano are already fairly near.

Is one base enough for a first visit?

Usually yes. The areas above are connected by taxi, app or subte, so most visitors keep one hotel and move around from there.
