Cacheuta and Potrerillos are the mountain outing closest to Mendoza city. Cacheuta, in the gorge of the Mendoza river, is known for its hot springs; Potrerillos, further up the same valley, for its reservoir and outdoor activities. You can visit one or combine both in a single day.
Two places, two kinds of day
- Cacheuta hot springs: there is a thermal water park for day visitors and, separately, a hotel with a spa. They are two different places, each with its own entry and reservation.
- Potrerillos: the reservoir with water sports, rafting on the Mendoza river, horse riding and weekend houses.
How the transfer works
Most people go and return the same day: the driver drops you at the entrance, waits or comes back at the agreed time, and takes you home. If you are staying at the Cacheuta hotel or in a cabin in Potrerillos, the transfer is one way and the return is booked for another date.
Entry to the springs, spa sessions and excursions are booked and paid by you. Before fixing a departure time, check whether your ticket has an entry slot.
Busy days and seasons
At weekends, on public holidays and in school holidays the thermal park fills up and there can be a queue at the entrance. If you can choose, go on a weekday and leave early.
It is cooler in the mountains than in the city. Bring a warm layer for the afternoon as well as swimwear and a dry change of clothes.
To carry on along the same road into the high Andes, see High Andes and Aconcagua.
