In Mendoza, “Alta Montaña” means the drive west along Ruta Nacional 7, deep into the Andes, as far as the Chilean border. It is a full-day outing: the vehicle and driver stay with your group from morning to late afternoon, and you choose the stops.

What you see on the way

  • Potrerillos and its reservoir, where the mountains begin.
  • Uspallata, a broad valley where almost everyone stops for lunch.
  • Puente del Inca, a natural rock bridge.
  • The entrance to Aconcagua Provincial Park, with a viewpoint towards the highest mountain in the Americas.
  • Las Cuevas, the last village before the border.

What the road is like

RN 7 is paved, but it is a mountain road shared with the trucks travelling to and from Chile, so progress is slow in places. In winter, snow can close it. Road conditions are therefore checked before setting out, and if the road is shut we change the date or the route.

What to bring and what to expect

  • Warm clothing at any time of year: it is cold and windy up there even when the city is hot.
  • Water and sun protection.
  • The route climbs to high altitude. Take it easy when you get out of the vehicle and, if you have a health condition, consult your doctor beforehand.
  • Entry to the provincial park is handled by the park and paid by each visitor. Check the current conditions.

If you are continuing to Chile

The crossing is a high mountain pass that depends on the weather. Whether the transfer is available, and on what conditions, is confirmed when booking, and each passenger’s documents must be checked with the migration authority of each country.

For a shorter outing on the same road, see Cacheuta and Potrerillos.
