Waterfalls first, beach afterwards: that is the usual reason for this trip, which links Puerto Iguazú with Florianópolis by crossing the whole state of Paraná and then following the coast of Santa Catarina. The border comes at the very start, moments after setting off, and everything after it is Brazilian road. Whether the transfer is available, and on what conditions, is confirmed at booking.
The road
- The Tancredo Neves bridge from Puerto Iguazú to Foz do Iguaçu, with both countries’ controls.
- The BR-277 highway east across Paraná to the Curitiba area.
- The descent of the Serra do Mar range to the coast, with bends and many trucks.
- The BR-101 highway south, as far as the bridge onto the island.
One day or two
It is a full day on the road, plus the border. Some travellers prefer to do it in one go, leaving before dawn; others split it with a night in Curitiba. With children the second plan is usually easier. The schedule is settled with the quote.
When the car makes sense
Foz do Iguaçu airport has flights within Brazil, and for a few people flying is usually quicker. A private transfer suits families and groups sharing a vehicle, travellers with a lot of luggage or a pet, and anyone who wants to stop along the way.
The border as you leave
The wait at the bridge changes with the day, the hour and the season, and we do not promise a crossing time. Our guide to the Tancredo Neves bridge explains what it depends on. Each passenger crosses with a valid travel document; which one is accepted depends on nationality and must be checked with the migration authority of Argentina and of Brazil.
